Community and School-based Prevention Education

At Wade Knox Children's Advocacy Center, we believe it is our job to educate our community on the signs of child abuse and do our best to prevent abuse from happening. The Education and Prevention component of the CAC gives us the opportunity to go into schools, child care facilities, churches, businesses, and other community organizations to provide information on the Wade Knox Children's Advocacy Center. We can provide different prevention programs to children of all ages, as well as Mandated Reporter training and other education programs for adults.

A wonderful, child friendly book teaching young children that it's ok to resist uncomfortable touches. Younger Pre-K children are not quite ready to discuss this issue, but they are ready to learn how their feelings can help them make decisions about their bodies.

This book is very age appropriate. It does not discuss or show private parts and does not discuss sexual abuse of young children. A bear puppet is also used to aid with interaction with the children while the book is being read.

MBF Child Safety Matters is a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum for elementary students in grades K-5. The program educates and empowers children and all relevant adults with information and strategies to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, all types of abuse, and digital abuse dangers. This curriculum is presented in a classroom setting in two comprehensive lessons ranging from 30-55 minutes.

MBF Teen After School Safety Matters is a comprehensive, evidence-informed prevention education program for youth in grades K-8 in after-school programs and youth-serving organizations. The program teaches children and adults how to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to the four types of child abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect), bullying, cyberbullying, and digital dangers. It is presented to youth in grade-level clusters (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8) with topic specific lessons. The lessons include lectures, group discussions, skills-practice activities, games, and crafts.

MBF Athlete Safety Matters is a comprehensive, evidence-informed curriculum that educates and empowers youth athletes with information and strategies to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, all types of abuse, and digital dangers. The program is presented to youth athletes in clusters by grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12), in two comprehensive lessons that are 45-55 minutes each. The lessons include engaging PowerPoint presentations, lectures, group discussions, skills-practice activities, videos, and games.

Researched-based program by Gunderson and the Jacob Wetterling research Center to teach children to develop appropriate body safety rules and boundaries. The program focuses on teaching children four safety rules as well as the development of a safety net composed of five trusted adults to turn to if they are being asked to break one of those rules. The programs aim is to teach all children that they are special and deserve to be safe. The program has interactive components to assist children with applying the rules and developing their safety net.

The non-profit Barbara Sinatra Children's Center Foundation in conjunction with Wonder Media and the Joshua Center on Child Sexual Abuse at the university of Washington developed this program to educate all ages of children and teens about what to do when confronted with abusive behaviors.

The program consists of several short videos scripted by child advocates, therapists, and national scholars. Each video series is age appropriate (Grades K-3, Grades 4-6, and a Teen Series) and emphasizes the importance of going to a parent or trusted adult if they experience an unsafe situation.
